After working in interiors for more than a decade, the Austria-born designer Catherine Bruckner co-founded a design studio with her husband, Nathan, last year. They called it Casalta — named after the street in Brussels where Nathan grew up, and a fitting portmanteau for a design firm specializing in home and commercial interiors.
Since then, the design duo has unveiled The Observatory — a private event space in Lower Manhattan — and, earlier this month, introduced a homewares line of modernist flatware, coasters and other objects. (Simple and striking in nickel-plated steel, their candle holders are now available for purchase at The Attersee Studio.)
Below, Catherine shares a few of her favorite things — from a collectible Italian lamp to the cult hairbrush she can’t live without.
A Reimagined Classic
"Matthieu Blazy offers a thoughtful reinterpretation of Le Corbusier’s classic LC14 Tabouret stool, using a scorched wood finish inspired by Japanese wood-burning techniques. I love how the original’s radical simplicity is preserved while Blazy’s version adds a subtle graphic spark."
LC 14 Tabouret Cabanon, $3000
Colorful Child's Cutlery
“David Mellor gets it just right: bright acetal resin handles that kids are drawn to and simple, thoughtful shapes that help little ones eat on their own with ease.”
Child's Cutlery Set, $96
A Mid-Century Italian Lamp
"I first noticed this lamp by Achille Castiglioni in the Upper East Side apartment of an older gentleman with a remarkable art collection. His ever-evolving space is a work of art itself, and the Taccia lamp –– resting on art books beside a Coromandel lacquer screen –– made a lasting impression."
Taccia Table Lamp, $3,725
A Cult-Favorite Hairbrush
“I’ve been using this brush for years — it’s gentle and works really well on damp hair too! I use it on myself and my 4-year-old daughter, and we both appreciate the smooth, easy brush-through.”
A Modernist Teapot
"Made from polished steel with a wrapped wicker handle, this Nick Munro teapot has a modernist sensibility and balanced proportions — not too serious, not too playful. I got it when I was a student in London and am still using it to this day!”
Spheres Tea Infuser, $175
